Equivalent* Exchange - Part Two

"Don't worry love, I managed to track down some available folks that meet at least some of what you asked for" she explains, the sound of her heels clicking growing further away as she speaks. "I'm just going to step out for a smoke, I'll be back in a minute. Just give those a chance love, give a look at those five."

My gaze turns down towards the sheet of paper in my hand, my head banging lightly against the large device still covering me from the temples up. The text on the page is relatively small, a cost-cutting measure to save ink, and the descriptors are rather sparse.

When I had heard there would be five to choose from I had figured there would be more to go off of than this, a few little words designed to give just a brief glimpse into the lives of these people.

"I guess..." I mumble to myself, bringing the page closer to my face so I'd have even the slightest chance to read it. "I guess they don't want to be giving out too much information."

My eyes scan the page taking in what little I had been provided.

My eyes go wide as I glance over the names, my gaze glued to the sex if each of the available candidates for the exchange. Not a man in sight, the technician apparently only having found a few women either in th same position as myself or in storage that matched those few little key phrases.

My blood runs cold as I read them over, struggling to get much of an understanding from each of the short entries. It just didn't make much sense, at least from my side of th experience. How did they make this sort of decision off of so little information? Was I only getting some trimmed down version? Was it for privacy reasons?

The group skewed young, with even the oldest of the lot being a few years younger than myself. "At least there's that" I mutter under my breath, chuckling awkwardly as I try to read over the other keywords.

While many are expected a few leave me in a cold sweat. The thought of living with parents again chills me, especially in having to pretend to be someone's else's daughter after so long as an independent person.

Worse yet, my gaze remains glued to the phrase 'kinky'. My mind races at the idea of it being included in the keywords, imagining just how much of a trait it needed to be to make its way to the profile.

"I can't believe... So many are..." I muse through gritted teeth, looking over the relationship statuses of all the women. I had been single for quite a while, that change from a single man to woman likely not being too drastic. However, my stomach churns at the thought of becoming someone's girlfriend or even more terrifying fiancee. "Would they... Do they know about..." I mutter, shifting awkwardly as I knock my head once more.

I barely have time to even consider my decision before I'm snapped back to reality, the sound of the door opening behind me announcing the technician's return.

"Of course it starts raining right when..." She groans, her voice dripping with frustration at her nicotine needs being stymied by nature itself.

I listen as her clicking footsteps pace over to where she had once stood, the clattering of the keyboard letting me know she had made it back to her work station.

"Gonna need a longer bre..." She grumbles, the device above whirring and hissing slightly as she types. "Alright love, so where are we sending you then?" The technician asks, her rough voice failing to hide frustration with her situation.

"Um..." I hiss out weakly, struggling to speak up. "I was wondering... I mean... Is there any..."

"Men?" The technician chuckles, anticipating the end of my query. "Sorry love, but based off what you wanted these lovely ladies were all we had on hand. At least in keeping things around the same..."

"Well, can I wait for..." I try to ask, a faint odd scent reaching my nostrils as I begin to feel light headed.

"Sorry love, but we've already got someone en route to come get their new body" explains the technician, clicking her tongue a little afterwards. "If you aren't liking what I found for you... I suppose we could put you in storage until something else comes along, though it's not like you'll be in a position to pick once we have you all scooped..."

My head feels hazy, my eyelids fluttering as the stale smell continues to pour from the device above me. It's all too late before I realize what it is, my arms and legs going limp as I lean against the back of the chair for support.

"But... I... " I blurt out, my words slurring as I grow more and more intoxicated on the intrusive gas.

"Come now love" the technician urges, her fingernails tapping against some wooden surface. "Are you picking someone or..."

My mouth hangs open for a moment in a stupified fashion, a low.gurgle rising from my throat as I struggle to string even two thoughts together. Staring down at the tiled floor I watch as the dark lines between blur and fade together, my vision waning by the second.

Coughing to clear my throat and focusing my sleepy mind, I finally manage to croak out...
